Recently, a disturbing video surfaced showing students looting a tuckshop in South Africa. At first glance, some might speculate that hunger drove these young individuals to such desperate measures. Perhaps they saw their parents doing the same and believed it was acceptable. But this is a dangerous cycle that must be broken.
The troubling reality is that many of these students are imitating behaviors they’ve observed in their own homes and communities. We’ve seen parents chasing foreigners in the streets, and in some cases, violence has resulted in foreigners being harmed or killed. Such actions send a clear message to our youth: that foreigners are less valuable, or worse, enemies. This mentality of dehumanizing others and calling foreigners “kwerekwere” must come to an end.
South Africa stands at a crossroads. The nation is divided—fighting against its own future by fostering hatred and violence among brothers and sisters. Instead of unity, we see communities torn apart by prejudice and fear. This division weakens us all and hampers our collective progress.
When faced with challenges like hunger, unemployment, and poverty, the solution is not to turn against one another. Africans must learn to stand together, support each other, and build a future based on solidarity and mutual respect. Our strength lies in unity, not in division.
Let us reflect on our shared values and commit to fostering a society where every individual is valued, regardless of their nationality. Only then can we truly move forward as a nation and a continent.
