Being a woman in South Africa is becoming a terrifying reality.

Between July 15 and September 16, 2026, Gauteng police made the grim discovery of five bodies of women murdered in the Kempton Park area. Most were found half-naked, discarded like they meant nothing. The cases appear to be linked, raising fears of a serial killer operating in the area, although police have yet to conclusively confirm it.

And once again, the message to women is the same: Be vigilant. Don’t walk alone. Don’t jog alone. Share your location. Watch what you wear. Watch where you go.

How much more must we be told to calculate our safety for simply existing?

Why is the burden always placed on women to protect ourselves, instead of demanding that men stop killing women?

I am tired. We are all tired.

Tired of leaving home and our mothers praying we return. Tired of turning our keys into weapons between our fingers. Tired of pretending we feel safe when we don’t.

So the conversation cannot only be about what women should do differently.

It has to be about accountability. It has to be about cases being taken seriously the first time.

It has to be about proper investigations, not just when the body count reaches five. It has to be about violent behaviour being challenged early – in our homes, in our schools, in our friend groups.

We don’t want to be strong anymore. We want to be safe. We want to be alive.
