For years, Zimbabweans and South Africans coexisted peacefully in Mossel Bay, sharing communities, working together, and contributing to the local economy. However, recent events have shattered this harmony, revealing a darker side rooted in envy, jealousy, sadism, selfishness, and greed.
On Wednesday evening, what began as a tense situation quickly escalated into violence. Reports indicate that South Africans turned hostile, launching attacks on Zimbabweans—stealing their belongings, setting their shacks ablaze, and chasing them from the town.
Social media is rife with distressing messages of two deaths and numerous injuries, though officials from the Western Cape Police, led by Captain Malcolm Pojie, have stated they have not received official confirmation of such fatalities.
This violence marks a disturbing departure from the unity that once defined the community. South Africans involved in these acts have become criminals, breaking laws and abusing their fellow Africans—brothers and sisters who came to South Africa seeking safety, opportunity, and a better life.
Children have borne the brunt of this brutality. Witnessing violence and experiencing displacement inflicts deep trauma, affecting their psychological well-being and future stability. What was once a peaceful coexistence has been overshadowed by fear and hostility, driven by unfounded accusations that Zimbabweans are taking jobs and housing meant for South Africans.
Local leader and ward councillor Thobeka Mjacu condemned the violence vehemently. “Targeting foreign nationals and destroying their homes is not the solution to our economic challenges,” she stated. “We are all human beings deserving of dignity.” Her words echo a universal truth—violence and xenophobia only deepen the wounds of a nation already grappling with socio-economic hardships.
The Zimbabwean Community Association in the Western Cape has issued a plea for protection, emphasizing that many of these families are hardworking, lawful residents with valid asylum permits.
“These are hardworking people, many of whom hold valid asylum permits. They are not criminals,” said spokesperson Tinashe Mucherahowa.
Their appeal underscores the reality that innocent lives are being destroyed under the guise of economic frustration.
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has issued a stern warning: acts of xenophobia and violence violate the South African constitution and undermine the country’s moral foundation. Such actions threaten the dignity and safety of all foreign nationals living peacefully within South Africa.
As violence continues to threaten lives and displace families, it is crucial that we speak out against hatred and discrimination. We must remember that unity and understanding are the only paths toward healing. All South Africans and immigrants alike deserve respect, safety, and the opportunity to live without fear.
