Pietermaritzburg mourns the loss of a young life as Amahle Mkhize, a vibrant 19-year-old girl, was brutally stabbed to death in a devastating act of violence. The heartbreaking incident occurred when Amahle, witnessing her friend embroiled in an argument with her boyfriend, courageously intervened to de-escalate the situation. Tragically, her act of kindness and bravery ended in her own death, as she was stabbed seven times by the friend’s boyfriend.

This horrific event highlights a disturbing trend of cruelty and violence directed at young girls in our communities. Such acts of brutality are not only heartbreaking but also unacceptable. It underscores the urgent need for societal change—conflicts that often escalate to violence can frequently be resolved through dialogue and understanding, rather than violence and bloodshed.

We call for justice to be served. The perpetrator must be swiftly arrested and face the full severity of the law. Violence against women and girls is a crime that cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. It is imperative that our justice system acts decisively to punish such heinous acts and sends a clear message that violence has no place in our society.
